A Modern Medical Facility Designed for Care, Comfort, and Longevity

Executive Summary

Healthcare environments are under increasing pressure to perform. Facilities must support advanced clinical care, adapt to evolving technologies, and deliver a human-centered experience for both patients and providers.

The UCI Medical Building represents a large-scale response to these demands. As part of a broader medical campus expansion, the project required a highly coordinated approach to interior environments that could balance performance, flexibility, and long-term durability.

bluespace interiors collaborated across the project lifecycle, delivering specialized expertise in furniture strategy, procurement, and installation. The focus was clear: ensure every environment was equipped to perform at the level modern healthcare demands.

The Challenge

Healthcare projects at this scale require precision across every layer of execution. Interior environments must meet clinical standards while supporting comfort, efficiency, and long-term use.

Key challenges included:

  • Aligning furniture solutions with clinical workflows and patient needs
  • Ensuring durability and cleanability across high-use environments
  • Coordinating procurement within a large, multi-phase construction timeline
  • Maintaining consistency across diverse spaces, from clinical areas to administrative zones
  • Supporting future flexibility without compromising current performance

This required a deep understanding of healthcare environments and how each element contributes to overall system performance.

Scope of Work

bluespace interiors delivered a comprehensive, solution-driven scope focused on aligning furniture with performance, experience, and long-term value.

bluespace interiors worked closely with the client to deliver a furniture-driven approach. Through mockup environments and iterative product and finish reviews, alignment was achieved across brand standards, performance requirements, and sustainability goals.

Furniture solutions were curated to support a wide range of healthcare functions, including administrative offices, clinical and telehealth environments, training spaces, and shared areas—each designed for durability, flexibility, and long-term use.

The Strategy

bluespace interiors approached the UCI Medical Building with a focus on aligning procurement with performance.

Furniture was treated as a critical component of how the environment operates, not as a final layer.

The strategy focused on three key areas:

1. Healthcare-Driven Product Alignment

Every solution was evaluated based on performance in a clinical setting, including infection control, durability, ergonomics, and long-term maintenance.

2. Scalable Procurement Execution

Procurement strategies were structured to support a multi-phase project, ensuring consistency, efficiency, and alignment across all environments.

3. Experience Through Functionality

Environments were selected to support both operational performance and human experience, balancing patient comfort with staff efficiency.

Implementation & Project Management

Execution required close coordination to ensure alignment between design intent and delivered environments.

Project Management

bluespace interiors managed all product procurement and installation, maintaining schedule discipline and minimizing disruption throughout the build.

The team supported the construction process by providing furniture-driven solutions in place of architectural change orders, helping mitigate delays and maintain project momentum.

Through close coordination with project stakeholders, manufacturers, and installers, the project was delivered on schedule and within scope.

Scale & Integration

The UCI Medical Building is part of a broader healthcare campus designed to support advanced care delivery at scale.

Interior environments were developed to function within a larger system, connecting clinical, administrative, and shared spaces into a cohesive experience.

Consistency, reliability, and adaptability were essential to ensuring the environment supports both current operations and future growth.

Outcomes

The completed facility is a sophisticated, patient-centered healthcare environment that balances warmth, functionality, and sustainability.

• Furniture solutions aligned with clinical workflows and operational needs
• Enhanced durability and long-term value across high-use environments
• Consistent experience across a large-scale medical facility
• Environments that support both patient comfort and staff efficiency

The space reflects the client’s vision while establishing a scalable design standard for the broader campus—delivered with clarity, precision, and long-term intent.

Conclusion

The UCI Medical Building demonstrates that high-performing healthcare environments require alignment across every layer of execution.

Furniture plays a critical role in how care is delivered, how teams operate, and how patients experience a space.

bluespace interiors brings a deep understanding of healthcare environments, ensuring every solution supports performance, longevity, and the people who rely on these spaces every day.
